The Halo Championship Series held its World Championship celebration this past weekend in Seattle. As is tradition, other Halo-related announcements were made during the event. A remake of Halo: Combat Evolved was announced; however, that wasn’t the only major announcement.
Since the release of Halo Infinite, lore enthusiasts have been debating what name The Weapon chose at the end of the game. Many fans were convinced she had chosen the name Cortana, since she is essentially a copy of her. However, others speculated that the name would be connected to legendary swords, just like Cortana and Roland. Those fans were right.
During the community stage, while the legendary voices Steve Downes and Jen Taylor were reading scenes with fans, Jen herself revealed the name the Weapon had chosen… Joyeuse. The scene was taken from the upcoming novel Halo: Edge of Dawn by Kelly Gay, the author of several other Halo books.
Joyeuse is also the name of the legendary sword of Charlemagne, which is on display at the Louvre Museum! It’s great to see Halo Studios continue this tradition. Most importantly, the name Joyeuse—or, as fans have already started calling her, Joy—fits perfectly with The Weapon and her personality. She was a major reason the Halo Infinite campaign was so enjoyable. It is now up to us fans to wait for the release of Edge of Dawn and the game’s next story.
